This diet uses medium chain triglycerides (MCT), a type of fat from coconut and palm oil. MCT can be taken either as an oil or an emulsion. MCT has the advantage of being used by the body more quickly than long chain fats and producing more ketones per gram of fat. As ketones are more readily available in this type of ketogenic diet, less total fat is needed, meaning more carbohydrate and protein foods are allowed. The amount of MCT for your or your child's ketogenic diet will be determined by your dietitian and/or ketogenic team.
Usually, MCT is introduced slowly into the diet to help with tolerance. A source of MCT is typically required at each meal or snack. Although this type of ketogenic diet tends to provide more flexibility, as well as carbohydrate and protein in the diet; meals and snacks still need to be carefully planned, calculated and weighed.
